Welcome !!!

Hello and welcome to our blog.

Starting March 17th 2018 we embark on a road trip of epic proportions along the "Powder Highway" - in the Canadian provinces of Alberta and British Columbia. We will start with a night at Calgary then head on to these five destinations for between 3 and 5 days each.

  • Fernie - 3 nights at the Lizard Creek Lodge
  • Nelson - 4 nights at the Hume Hotel & Spa
  • Revelstoke - 3 nights at The Sutton Place Hotel
  • Panorama - 5 nights at 1000 Peaks Summit
  • Lake Louise - 3 nights at the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise
Why? Well, partly to celebrate my 50th birthday and Finlay's16th birthday, but also just a darn good excuse to get out there and take in as many new experiences and sights as possible.

Chateau Lake Louise - our final stop

So with less than a week to go now until we set off for Canada I thought it was about time we got this blog off the blocks.

My name is Mark Smith and I'm travelling with my wife Karen and our son Finlay. We are from Sheffield in sunny South Yorkshire, UK. As a bonus, for the last week of this trip we will be joined my niece Ellie who is flying out to join us in Panorama and Lake Louise.

I'm not entirely sure how this blog will pan out, it is the first time we've tried this sort of thing. The idea is that we can keep a diary of our holiday without at the same time cluttering up everybody's facebook!  If you want to see how we are getting on or what we are getting up to just bookmark this page and come back as often as you like.  Or use the link on the right to get updates emailed to you. And please use the comments links at the bottom of each post to let us know what you think or if there's anything you want to see.

Our intention is to provide regular updates with (hopefully) some nice photos and maybe the odd video clip.

Lets start off by sharing our trip overview (click the "Pop Out" link to open the PDF in full). This is a little something we've knocked together over the last year or so while we have been planning the trip.  It started off as a way of keeping track of dates/times/places etc while we were mulling over the options, but more recently as all the elements have come together and been confirmed it has evolved into a more thorough plan of where/when/how.  The little icons in the resort detail sections show how many skiing days we have planned at each area.  The map doesn't really do the size of the area justice with most journeys between resorts being between 3 to 4 hours drive. Having this all written down like this has proved really useful to us in keeping track of things and helps our friends and family know roughly where we will be and when and what we might likely be getting up to at as the holiday progresses.  It's also really helped Finlay get to grips with our plans and as a result he's now really clued up on the whole thing ... and super excited !

The only part missing from the plan above is our trip down to Heathrow on the Friday night where we will spend the night at the Bath Road Premier Inn. So for completeness we should also take this into account.  But for me the holiday doesn't really start until the bags are checked in and you've got through the nightmare of security checks, so the "Start Here" reference means exactly that ... or to be more precise, the nearest bar just the other side of security checks.

A bar just the other side of security checks - Heathrow T2

For now though you'll have to excuse me, we have bags to pack.
